Duane R. "Andy" Anderson, 89, of Gowrie, passed away July 12, 2014 at the Gowrie Care Center.
Andy is survived by his wife, Oda (Scherff) Anderson of Gowrie; six children, Steve (June) of Sarnia, Ontario Canada; Pamela Anderson of Apple Valley, MN; Barry Anderson of Bettendorf, IA; Terry Anderson of Muscatine, IA; Shawn (JoAnn) Anderson of Gowrie; Darin (Beth Ann) Anderson of Park View, IA;12 grandchildren, Troy (Alexzandra) Anderson; Teresa Anderson; David Anderson; Michelle Anderson; Aaron (Fallon) Anderson; Christopher Anderson; Amanda Anderson; Nicholas Anderson; Andrew Anderson; Brett Anderson; Matthew Anderson; Nathan Anderson; three great grandchildren, William Anderson; Abigail Anderson; and Addison Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Hazel (Jorgensen) Anderson; and brother, Delmar Anderson of Gowrie.
Andy was born September 1, 1924, the son of Russell E. and Hazel M. Anderson in Paton, Iowa and soon moved to Gowrie, graduating from Gowrie Consolidated High School in 1944. He joined the U.S. Navy in November of 1942, serving Boot Camp in Farragut, Idaho, and then served on an LST at the invasion of France in the Mediterranean campaign. Upon returning to the States, he married Oda Scherff at the United Methodist Church in Gowrie on April 29, 1945. They lived one year in Groton, Connecticut until his discharge where they returned to Gowrie and farmed for several years. They moved into Gowrie at their present house in 1954 where Andy worked for Rannigar's and then as a feed sale person for Bruntlett Elevator. He bought the Elevator in 1968 and sold it to his son, Shawn, upon retirement in 1988.
While living in Gowrie, Andy was active in the Gowrie Gaucho drum and bugle corps, helping them to win several senior corps state championships until the corps disbanded in 1965. Andy was also an active member of Peterson Post 431 of the American Legion where he served many times as Post Commander and also served as the 8th District Commander. Andy was the oldest active member of Peterson Post 431 and will be buried with military honors. He served for 16 years as Chairman of the Webster County Draft Board, was a member of the Gowrie Masonic Lodge where he served as Master of the Lodge, and was also a member of the Fort Dodge Shrine Club where he helped to raise thousands of dollars for the Shriner's Hospital. Andy also served on the Gowrie Fire Department, volunteer Ambulance Service, and was very active with the Zion Lutheran Church.
