He was born Oct. 4, 1945, in Garrett, Ky., the only child of the late Luther and Dawsie Cox.
Mr. Cox attended Fauquier High School and was a member of the National Guard. He was chief deputy for the Fauquier County Sheriff's Office and later for the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office, respectively. His father served as Fauquier County's sheriff from 1971 through 1983.
He is survived by his wife, Sharyl Cox of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; his son, Matthew C. Cox of Warrenton; his son's mother, Wendy Gray of Warrenton, and his stepmother, Doris B. Cox of Warrenton.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. A service will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, May 12, at the funeral home, with burial to follow in Warrenton Cemetery.
