Carl Howard Grimes, 83, of Third Street, Benton, died late Monday night, September 14th, 2009 at the Bloomsburg Health Care Center. He had been in ill health for the past several years.

Born August 4, 1926 in Mt. Pleasant Township, he was a son of the late Stewart Ramsey Grimes and Jennie Marie (Black) Grimes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Marie (Jacques) Grimes on May 27, 2007.

Mr. Grimes farmed in his early life and worked for Gay-Murray Hardware and Farm Equipment in Tunkhannock. He had later worked for Rock's Steak House, Browns Catering Service, the Buckhorn Truck Stop, Hotel Magee and Magee Carpet Company. He retired from custodial work at the Benton Area School District on June 8, 1988.

He was also a school crossing guard for many years and a security guard for athletic events at the Benton School. He worked 31 years as a parking attendant at the Bloomsburg Fair, assisted at many carnivals in the area for traffic control and had directed traffic for numerous parades in the Benton area. He had also worked at Strausser's Home for Funerals and later the McMichael Funeral Home in Benton.

Mr. Grimes had been a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church of Bloomsburg for over 60 years. He was also a Lieutenant of the Benton Fire Police. He belonged to numerous organizations, of which he was a life member, including the Pennsylvania Fire Police Association; Columbia County Fire Police; a life member of the Benton Volunteer Fire Company and Fire Police; Buckhorn Fire Company and the North American Hunting Club. He was also a member of the Fishing Creek Sportsman's Association; the AARP; the PASR, Columbia- Montour Chapter and an honorary member of the PA Sheriff's Association.

Surviving, are his son, Stewart H. Grimes and his wife, Lori, of Waller; 3 Grandchildren: Matthew, Tyler and Kia Grimes and a brother, S. Raymond Grimes of Almedia;

In addition to his wife, Alice, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters who died in infancy.

Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Benton Fire Company or the Benton Fire Police. Arrangements are under the direction of the McMichael Funeral Home, Inc., Benton.
