"Austin, Texas, Dec. 30.-A. L. Teagarden, 73 years old, pioneer merchant of Austin, after an illness of several weeks, died at a local hospital last night. For many years he was in the queensware business in this city with Joe M. Shuemate. He had made his home in Texas since 1865 with the exception of the last few years, during which time he resided in St. Louis."

"Mr. Teagarden was born in Waverly, Ill., June 4, 1842. He spent his childhood days around St. Louis and during the Civil War fought with the Southern forces."

"Surviving are his wife and two daughters, Mrs. H. E. Lassiter of Tyler, Texas, and Mrs. J. Gregg Hill of Austin. The burial will take place at Calvert, Texas tomorrow."

During the 1890s, Teagarden was active in the Texas Liberal League, a Freethought society established in Waco in 1890.

Teagarden was married twice. His first wife was Lucretia Reese Graves, who he married in Harris County, Texas on December 17, 1867, and with whom he had two daughters, Minnie and Mabel. Following Lucretia's death on April 20, 1875, at Calvert, Texas, he married her sister, Margaret Addison "Maggie" Graves, in Robertson County, Texas on January 13, 1876.
