MRS. MARTHA M. GATES
Death Claims Aged Resident Who Had Long Been Ill
Mrs. Martha M. Gates, widow of Silas Gates, died at 8 o'clock Wednesday evening at the farm home of her daughter, Mrs. John Tamblin, in North Gouverneur, after a long illness due to dropsy, aged 76 years.
Mrs. Gates was born at South Edwards, N.Y., October 24, 1840, a daughter of Jacob and Nancy O'Neil Schuyler and the early years of her life were spent in that section. She was united in marriage to Mr. Gates in that town. He died about 20 years ago and the widow had since spent much of her time with her daughters. She was a most highly esteemed woman and had many friends both in this and her native town.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Tamblin at whose home she died and Mrs. John Whitmore also of North Gouverneur and one son, John Gates of Freemont, Mich., formerly of this village.
The funeral services were conducted from the Tamblin home at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon by Rev. M.A. Bartlett, pastor of the Spragueville Methodist Episcopal church and interment was made in Riverside cemetery, this village.
