James "Lee" Carter, 67, of Edison, N.J., died Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at JFK Medical Center in Edison. The funeral will be held on Friday, Sept. 20, at 9:45 a.m. in the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Ave. (Route 27), Metuchen, N.J., followed by a 10:15 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis Cathedral, Metuchen. Interment will be at Resurrection Burial Park, Piscataway, N.J. Visitation will be on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. To send condolences, please visit www.costello-runyon.com. Lee was born in New Brunswick, N.J., and was a lifelong resident of Edison. He attended both Fairleigh Dickinson University and Rider University. He was a communicant of St. Francis Cathedral in Metuchen. He proudly served our country for two tours in Vietnam, and was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps at the rank of corporal. He was a retired Edison police sergeant and was dedicated to the force for over 20 years. He belonged to the Marine Corps League, James Paige Detachment and American Legion Post No. 324. He was a past coach of Edison Angels softball. He was an avid reader, a military historian, and a baseball/softball enthusiast. Lee is survived by his wife of 38 years, Maryann Carter; three children, Michael Carter and his wife, Anne, of Edison, Jennifer Grajko and her husband, Adam, of South Plainfield, and Kelly Carter of Edison; three cherished grandchildren, Alexander, Katelyn, and Ella; his mother, Eleanor Carter of Florida; a sister, Lyn DePadua and her husband, Winefredo, of Florida; two brother-in-laws, Michael Kelly and Kim Duhamel of Edison, and Patrick Kelly and his wife, Denise, of South Plainfield; and nieces and nephews, Damien, Taina, Marissa, Brianne, Garrett, and Brigitte. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to RMTI (Transplant Institute at Mount Sinai), Mt. Sinai Medical Center, 1 Gustave Levy Pl., Box 1104, New York, N.Y. 10029-6574.
