Maronite Patriarch of Antioch. A native Djezzine, Pierre-Paul Méouchi entered the College de la Sagesse in Beirut, later moving to Rome, where he furthered his studies at the Pontifical Urbanian Athenaeum De Propaganda Fide and the Pontifical Gregorian University, being also ordained priest there in December 1917. Back in Lebanon, he was soon named secretary to Msgr. Augustin Bostani and successively to Msgr. Chucrallah Khoury during the latter's pastoral visit to the United States. Settling there up to 1934, assisting Maronites in Indiana, Connecticut and California, at the age of forty he was named bishop of the Eparchy of Tyr of Maronites in Lebonon. Receiving his episcopal consecration on December 8, 1934 in Bkerké, he was elected patriarch of the Maronite Patriarchate of Antioch on May 25, 1955. Pope Paul VI created him cardinal patriarch in the consistory of February 22, 1965. He died while still in office in Beirut.
