Phyllis Jean (Phlea) Graves Obituary

Family matriarch, loving sister, friend, and everybody's favorite auntie, PHYLLIS JEAN GRAVES (aka PHLEA), 89, of Carmichael, CA passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 17, 2014. She was born to the late Herbert White & Esther May [Babcock] Bennetts on May 29, 1925 in Sacramento, CA.

In spite of the depression, Phyllis and her siblings have many fond memories of growing up in rural Butte County where they spent their early childhood. Phyllis graduated with honors from Sacramento High School class of 1943. In 1944, at the age of 19, she started her career with Pacific Bell in Sacramento as a stenographer. Transferring to the San Francisco office in 1950, she quickly advanced to the position of executive Secretary. An avid skier, Phyllis was secretary and a founding member of the Tamarack Ski Club.

In 1966 she married the love of her life, the late Scott M. Graves. The happy coupled resided in Daly City, CA until his death in 1977.

After 36 years of dedicated service at Pacific Bell, Phyllis retired and relocated back to the Sacramento area. She and her sister Beverly purchased a duplex in Carmichael where they've lived ever since. Sisters...neighbors and consummate revelers, whether it be traveling, dining out or reveling, you rarely saw one without the other. Being members of the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society, Phyllis and Bev volunteered at &/or attended over 30 Jazz festivals both locally and abroad. In 1981 Phyllis started her 2nd career as a secretary for Western Mobilehome Association until retiring (again)in 1993.

Twice a cancer survivor, Phyllis volunteered at the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop on Marconi Ave . In 2007, Phyllis was recognized as a valued life member of The AT&T Pioneers. She worked hard, played hard, lived life to its fullest and had no regrets. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her quick wit, her love of her family, her love of her friends and her love of a good cocktail...Cheers Phlea!

Phyllis is survived by her sister Beverly A. Borcher & Family; brother, Russell C. Bennetts [Lorraine] & Family; The Family of her late sister, Shirley M. Miller; a plethora of nieces & nephews, grand-nieces & grand-nephews & many dear friends.

Family & Friends are invited to attend her internment & a Celebration of her Life on Monday, July 14, 2014. Internment scheduled for 1:00p.m. at East Lawn Memorial Park, 43rd & Folsom Blvd. Celebration of Life will be held at the family duplex in Carmichael following the internment.
