Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was mustered into the Civil War as a Major in Co. F of the 2nd California Volunteer Cavalry in 1861. In October 1864, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, and Colonel in November 1864. In 1865, he was brevetted Brigadier General of United States Volunteers. After the war, he remained in the army to served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 32nd United States Regular Infantry from 1866, when the 2nd California was mustered out, until his death in 1867.
