NORFOLK, Nebraska -- Viva Hildegarde Adams, 97, of Norfolk, died at Norfolk on Wednesday, March 25, 1992.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Methodist Church in Culbertson with the Rev. Sherry Skelnar officiating. Burial will be at Culbertson Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 today at Howser Funeral Home Chapel in Norfolk and 3-7 p.m. Sunday at Herrmann Funeral Chapel in Culbertson.

She was born January 9, 1895 at Fulda, Minnesota to Melker and Vivi (Gyllenhammer) Swanson.

Her family lived at Fulda; Bode, Iowa; and Central City, Ravenna, York, and Friend. She graduated from York High School and attended Kearney Normal School. She later graduated from the University of Nebraska.

She taught at Cozad, Oakland, and Wymore. During World War II, she taught at Beverly, Stratton, and Culbertson until her retirement.

She married James Dewey Adams in 1925 at Friend. They lived at Steele City and Arthur, where her husband taught in high schools. They later moved to a farm north of Inavale. In 1934 they moved to Culbertson, where they lived on a farm until moving to Kearney in 1976.

After the death of her husband in 1981, she lived in Kearney until moving to Norfolk in 1985.

She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a member of the Methodist Church and was active in United Methodist Women.

Survivors include sons, Dwight Adams, Kearney; and Gordon Adams, Norfolk; brother Clarence Swanson, Columbus, Montana; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
