He came back to visit family in 1876, traveling in 2 horse drawn wagons from Wisconsin to Philadelphia for the centennial then up through New England. It was a 6 month journey. He stopped in many Maine towns to visit old friends and relatives, including a visit with his Maine sisters, Celia Soule Ellis in St Albans, and Miranda Soule Sawyer in Skowhegan.
