Hugh A. Griffin, age 91, retired University of Tennessee Police Chief, passed away on July 9, 2014. Mr. Griffin was born June 26, 1923 on a cotton farm near Flora, Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his father Augustus (Gus) Griffin, his mother Bonnie Griffin, his sister, Leone and his brother Samuel. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Emogene (Gene) Bolling Griffin,

Mr. Griffin came to Oak Ridge in the late forties as a member of the Oak Ridge Police Department where he became a lieutenant in the detective department. A few years later, he went to Y-12 to work as a chemical operator. In the early 60's, he returned to law enforcement as Chief Deputy to newly elected Sheriff Archie Weaver in Knox County. In the late 60's Mr. Griffin joined the University of Tennessee Police Department as a detective and was soon promoted to Chief of Police. He retired in this position at the University in 1988.

Mr. Griffin's major recreational interest was horses. For many years, he trained and exhibited Tennessee walking horses. One of his best was Self Made Man. He was an avid University of Tennessee fan. Yes, his position required his presence at sporting events; but he was a loyal Volunteer, not only for sports but also for all university occasions. He did much to keep the campus safe for all students, faculty and staff, and visitors.

Mr. Griffin supported West Hills Baptist Church, where he and his wife were devoted members for many years. Those who knew him saw him as a pleasant, positive, and caring man.
