Kenneth the son of Wayne C. Swafford and Jeannette Swafford of Cincinnati OH enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on July 21 1966 in Cincinnati OH. In Vietnam he was assigned to and served with Company I, 3d Battalion, 5the Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On August 13, during Operation COCHISE along the border area of Quang Nam and Quang Tin Provinces Company I made contact with an enemy force east of Hill 445 in the vicinity of Vinh Dong. During the fire fight before the VC withdrew from the attacking Marines they inflicted several casualties. One Marine was killed in the action and five men were wounded. One of the casualties was LCpl Swafford who was killed in the action for a hostile gunshot wound.
