Howard worked as a duck & goose hunting guide for Mill's Wharf in Rockport, as well as a fishing guide. He then worked as a heavy equipment operator in the Port Lavaca area. He retired to Hallettsville where he ranched in the Appelt's Hill and New Kinkler Communities of Hallettsville.
Howard is survived by: wife Bonnie C. Appelt; children, Felix J. Appelt & wife Amy, Kenneth Appelt & wife Edith, Joyce Lee Gray, Laura Wood, and Calvin Appelt; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
Howard was preceded in death by: sons, Howard Jr., Donald, Glen and Alex Appelt; daughter Carol Dean Richards; and parents.

The funeral service will be held Monday, July 14th at 10:00 am at St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Hallettsville. Following the service, interment will be at the Hallettsville City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Cancer Society or Hospice of South Texas. Officiant: Pastor Andrew Taylor.
