Obituary: "DIED FROM INJURIES - Victim of Yesterdays Accident Badly Crushed - Dr. Albert R. Rhea, the physician who was struck by a Redondo avenue car on Third street yesterday afternoon, as mentioned briefly in the Telegram, died from his injuries while being removed to the hospital in Cleveland's ambulance. His injuries were worse than at first reported. The examination made by Dr. J.W. Wood and Dr. Hamman showed that Dr. Rhea's chest was crushed in, his left leg broken in two places above the knee and his knew fractured. In addition to this he sustained numerous cuts about the face. The most serious injury was the crushing in of his lungs, which resulted in internal hemorrhages. It is probable that Dr. Rhea's deafness, cased the tragedy. He had been in Los Angeles on business and came home after noon and after telling his wife of the Fiesta started up town on his bicycle on business, his wife going to a neighbor's where she saw the awful accident and was prostrated by the shock. Two children named Irwine were riding near him, and seeing the car approaching, called to him to stop, but the doctor heard not and rode to his death. All but the rear wheel of the bicycle had crossed when the collision come. Dr. Rhea was thrown back onto the track and his wheel tossed up, breaking the windows of the car, while the body was dragged along for half a block by the impetus of the car, and when picked up was caught in the vice of the forward trucks and it was necessary to back off the car before the body could be removed. Dr. Rhea was a native of Pennsylvania and 54 years of age. For a number of years he was surgeon of the Santa Fe, until his hearing affected by catarrhal troubles, grew so bad that he was compelled to abandon practice. He came to Long Beach six years ago and has since lived quietly. Besides a widow, two sons and a daughter survive, J.I. Rhea of 419 Pacific avenue, J.W. Rhea and Miss Nellie Rhea of 221 Elm avenue, and also two sisters in Redlands. His school days were passed in Armstrong and Olin counties, Pa., until twelve years of age, when his parents removed to Northwestern Ohio. Entering the Western Reserve College at Hudson, Ohio, he completed his freshman year in that institution, and graduated from the medical department of the same university in March, 1880. He began the practice of medicine at Sharpsville, Mercer county, Pa., remaining there four years, then removed to California and practiced medicine one year and a half in Los Angeles. February 6, 1885, he went to Calico, and has lived on the desert ever since. He owned and operated a drug store in Calico and passed through the rise and decline of that town in its mining days. He was instrumental in promoting and organizing the Silver Valley Land & Water Company, investing forty-six thousand dollars in cash in that enterprise, of which he has recently disposed of a controlling interest. he has been very fortunate in his mining operations, having lately sold iron mining properties bringing him fifty thousand dollars, and still holds property worth much more than that figure. He has been gradually getting possession of mining property during the past seven years, from which he expects to realize a fortune. Dr. RHEA is a very enthusiastic and loyal son of the land in which he has prospered for he expects to spend the balance of his life on the desert. Dr. RHEA was married in San Bernardino to Miss Hannah S. GLENDENNING, of Sharpsville, Mercer county, Pa. They have no children.
