NORTHAMPTON - Rita "Jeannette" Sharac died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at the Overlook of Northampton, surrounded by her family. Rita was born Jan. 20, 1921, in Haydenville, the youngest of 16 children, to Napoleon and Stephanie (Richards) Lupien. She was the widow of Joseph Szarkowski Sharac, who passed away in 2001.

Rita worked as a cook in several Northampton public schools: Hawley Jr. High, Florence Grammar and Jackson Street School. Her hobbies included reading, cooking, knitting, her daily crossword puzzles, and summers at the family home in New Harbor, Maine. Most of all, Rita enjoyed the company of her family and friends, and doing everything to make everyone around her happy, content, and well fed.

In addition to her loving husband Joe, Rita was predeceased by her beloved son, Joseph Sharac Szarkowski (2005), granddaughter, Robin (2002), grandson, Billy (1988), and granddaughter, Nicole (1969).

Our mother will be deeply missed by her loving children, Sheila, Peter, Thomas, Ebby, and Holly; daughters-in-law, Carol and Josephine; sons-in-law, Dick and Harold; her nine grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild, as well as her many nieces and nephews. Rita also leaves her dear, close friends, Bill Finn and Bill Finn Jr.

Rita will also be missed by her animal companions, Dewey and Miss Butler. The family wishes to thank Dr. Mark Casey and Dr. Adam Garretson, the staff at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital and Overlook care facility for their great care and compassion, alone with the Palliative Care unit at Bay State Medical; and especially her nephew, Ed, and her nieces Joan and Eileen, and her caring neighbors Chet and Danielle.

Calling hours will be Tuesday night from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Czelusniak Funeral home of Northampton. The funeral will be Wednesday at 10 a.mm at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church on King Street, followed by burial at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions can be made to the Dakin Animal Shelter 163 Montague Rd, Leverett, MA 01054, U.S. Fund for UNICEF, 125 Maiden Lane, New York, NY 10038 , or to the Miles Medical Center, 35 Miles St., Damariscotta, Maine.
