Mary Davis also faced tremendous personal tragedy 22 years earlier. As a 45 year old wife and mother of five children (with the youngest just seven years old), Mary tragically lost her husband William, when he was "Ground To death" (as described by the newspaper) under the wheels of a trolley car at Third St. and King St. in Wilmington.

Matron Davis had been serving as a Wilmington Police Matron since June, 1910. She is the 2nd Policewoman known to have been killed in the line of duty in the United States. She received a full police funeral and was buried wearing her badge.
