She was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had a strong testimony of the Gospel and served faithfully in various callings. She served a Stake Mission to the Cambodian Branch and was an ordinance worker in the Oakland Temple.
She loved to be involved in genealogy and Temple Work. She looked forward to participating each week in a Jordan River Temple Sealing Session with her good friends and was sad when her health prevented her from participating there. At the end, she was still encouraging her family to be active in the research of their genealogy.
She loved being the "Cookie Grandma" during Sunday School with the Nursery children. She encouraged the children to put away their toys and to have fun identifying the animal forms on the cookies they were eating.
She loved people and would strike up a conversation with strangers in a grocery line. She loved to cook and enjoyed sharing her banana or zucchini bread with friends and family as an outward expression of her love for them.
Karen taught in various elementary schools in the States of Utah, California, and Colorado for forty years before her retirement.
She influenced the lives of many students during her tenure as a teacher. She taught them to read and write about the various animal pets in her classes. She made learning fun. She loved plants and took much joy in having a garden of flowers and when space permitted to grow some vegetable plants.
Karen is survived by her husband, John; two children, Nickolas (Patria) and Patti Jo Mazanis; grandchildren, John and Melissa; and sister, Jeanne (Bert) Johnson; as well as various nieces and nephews.
