Dean Burr Hubbard, 91, passed onto his eternal rest on Monday, June 20, 2011, at his home peacefully.
He was born on November 22, 1919, in the Town of Peru, Dunn County, Wisconsin, to Bert and Ruth (Catt) Hubbard. At an early age, his family moved to Thorp, Wisconsin, where the family farmed south of Thorp. Dean graduated from Thorp High School in 1937. On May 12, 1945, Dean married the love of his life, Clarice "Dolly" Warner. After farming his entire life, he retired in 1979 and moved to the Town of Withee.
Dean was a proud, lifelong member of the Thorp United Methodist Church. While farming, he was very active in the DHIA and ADA farm organizations. Dean served as a board member for many organizations including the Thorp School Board, Peoples Exchange Bank, Victory Memorial Hospital, Thorp Alumni Association and the Health Systems Agency board. He was also a member of the Masonic lodge.
In 2001, Dean received the very first "Friend of the City" award for picking up untold amounts of litter around the city on his daily walks. He spent ten years making Thorp a more beautiful place for everyone to live and visit.
Dean was proud of his blood donations. His last donation on May 31, 2011, brought him to a total donation of an amazing 98 pints.
Family was everything to Dean. He was a fearless leader who inspired many. He passed along a strong work ethic to his children as well as a love of family togetherness.
Dean loved fishing and deer and turkey hunting with his boys and grandchildren. He also loved to travel with his wonderful bride around America. He was a true Green Bay Packer fan and an even bigger fan of Thorp Athletics. He loved to sing and would hum a tune while he went about his day. Those who knew him have stories of his generosity, kind heart, helping hands or snowplowing service. He will be greatly missed by friends and family.
Dean is survived by his wife of 66 years; his four sons; one daughter; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. His children include Dennis (Fay) Hubbard of Esko, Minnesota, Corinne (Ron) Gjerning of Altoona, Gordon (Nancy) Hubbard of Sheboygan, Gerald (Susie) Hubbard of Medford, and Scott (Luauna) Hubbard of Thorp. Grandchildren include Travis Hubbard of Madison, Mathew Hubbard of Eau Claire, Anna (Chad) Lovaas of Eau Claire, Crissy (Morgan) Hanson of Chippewa Falls, JoAnne (Joe) Korpi of Ogden, Iowa, Bethany (Trapper) Niccum of Durango, Colorado, Adam Schneider of Baltimore, Maryland, Paul (Megan) Schneider of Thornhurst, Pennsylvania, JD, Carly and Max Hubbard of Medford, and Collin Hubbard of Thorp. Great-grandchildren include Dean and Quinn Hanson, Joshua and Josiah Korpi and Evan and Aiden Niccum. Dean is also survived by one sister, Beryl Wagner of Muskego, Wisconsin; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
Dean is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Allen; sisters, Evelyn Cook and Al Vera Boie; as well as his great-grandson, Samuel Lovaas.
Funeral services will be Friday, June 24, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at Thorp Funeral Home with a wake on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
