Henry Green Martin was born 11 March 1869 in north central Mississippi. He was one of nine children of Middleton Martin & Parthenia Houser and a grandson of Reverend James Martin who famously established several churches in and around Calhoun County, Mississippi. Raised in a farming community, Henry pursued a farming career both in Mississippi as a general farmer and in Texas where he tried his hand at rice farming.

Henry married Josephine Elizabeth (Bessie) Boyt in the summer of 1891 when he was 22 years old. Henry and Bessie had seven children. The first three were born in Mississippi and the last four were born in Texas. Henry and Bessie moved to Houston, Texas in 1904. Two of their children, Violet and Vivian both died very young (1904 & 1908) and are buried in Historic Hollywood Cemetery in the Houston Heights. About 1908 Henry moved his family to Jefferson Co. Texas (west of Beaumont) where he went to work in the rice fields for his mother-in-law Nannie Davis Boyt, and her children.

By 1920 and into the 1930’s Henry owned a grocery store on Hogan Street in North Houston. After moving from Hogan Street to 301 W. 21st Street in the Houston Heights the family began attending Baptist Temple where Henry became a deacon, as did his son Norman. In the 1940’s after son Glynn became Vice President of James Bute Company, Henry became a night watchman for the company. He was so punctual in his duties that on March 5th, 1949 when he was late punching in at a specific location the alarm company knew something was wrong. Henry was found with his night watchman key in his right hand beneath the time clock he was to have punched at 7PM. [Jack Glasscock – 2014]
