Marion Record on January 15, 1931

Many old friends and neighbors were shocked to hear of the sudden death of Grandma Penland Tuesday night. She had been in her usual good health and a few days before passing was on the streets of Marion chatting with old friends.
Mrs. Eliza Penland daughter of Mr. and Mrs. June Baxter, was born at Shabony Grove in Dekalb County Ill., August 15th 1846. Passed this life on January 7th, 1931 at age of 84 years, 4 months and 22 days.
In 1858 she came to Kansas with her parents and settled on Clarks Creek, Morris County, where she spent her childhood days. On March 4th 1864 she was married to Frank M. Penland and moved on a homestead four miles northwest of Marion. Later they moved to Peru, Chautauqua County, Kansas but after two years they returned to Marion and purchased the home where she spent many happy years since 1881.
Mrs. Penland was the last of a family of twelve children, ten boys and two girls. In the passing of Mrs. Penland, Marion loses not only one of it’s oldest settlers but one of it’s best women as well. Her life story is a long record of good works and kindly deeds. The sacrifices she made in pioneer days for her family and friends would make a story of thrilling interest. There were heroines; as well as, heroes in those days, and she never failed in the task before her. She shared the dangers and the hardships of those trying times as bravely, as the bravest, and all the years since has been like a good angel in Marion. A strong character, a fine personality, she held the respect and love of all who knew her.
Heaven’s choicest gift to the world is a good woman and Mrs. Penland was a good woman.
She was a member of the Christian Church of Marion many years. The remaining members of the family are: Mr. George Penland, Mrs. N. L. Olsen and Mrs. N. G. Smith, all of Marion. Fred Penland of Alliance, Nebraska, and 22 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
