Oliver Smith mustered into Company C, 10th regiment, Connecticut Infantry on Oct 22, 1861 in Hartford. He was wounded with a flesh wound on the forearm on December 14, 1862 in the Battle of Kinston, Whithall, North Carolina. On January 1, 1864, he reenlisted in Saint Augustine, Florida. On February 13, 1864 he was granted a 30 day furlough in Connecticut, where he married Laura M. Tucker on March 1, 1864. He returned to his unit and was killed on October 13, 1864 in the Battle of Darbytown Road just to the southeast of Richmond, Virginia.
