Printed in The Montgomery County Sentinel, 3 May 1907
Death of a Good Citizen. — Mr. John Daniel Offutt, a leading citizen of Darnestown district, died about 1 o'clock last Sunday afternoon, aged 68 years. In early manhood Mr. Offutt left his native home here for Tennessee, where he entered the business of railroad contracting and the many miles of road that he built in that State stand as a monument to his efficiency. Through diligence and economy he amassed a considerable competency in the pursuit of his contracts, but finally the strenuous business life he was following impaired his health and he returned to this county fifteen years ago or more. He then purchased a large farm near Travilah and made for himself an attractive home for the rest of his life. The re-invigorating life of farming did not restore fully his shattered health, but prolonged his days. His affability in all the affairs of life made him numerous friends at his home as well as in Tennessee, and his charity made the heart of many a deserving object beat with joy. He was a son of the late James Offutt and is survived by a widow, three brothers ‚ Jas. H. and Milford Offutt, of this county, and Dr. Lemuel Offutt, of Greenburg, Pa. — and two sisters — Mrs. Bettie Clagett, of this county, and Mrs. Clara Stauffer, of Frederick county.
