The Boarding School of Marshall S. Rice opened on the first Monday of May 1825, until Nov 1847. The location was selected because it was healthful, without tavern or grog-shop, and in daily communication by stage with Boston. Surveyor for the Town of Newton, Marshall surveyed and platted Newton Cemetery when it was founded in 1855.
The Methodist Episcopal Church Newton Centre began weekly meetings in the old engine-house Jun 1875. It was regarded as first as a mission station of the Methodist Church at Newton Upper Falls. The late Marshall S. Rice left by will $1000 dollars to the society for a church edifice. The church was organized in 1879.
