DR. MELVIN THOMAS HARRIS, age seventy-eight, of Columbus, Ohio, passed peacefully on Sunday, May 26, 2022. He was surrounded by family and loved ones. Melvin was born in Newton, Georgia, to Thomas J. Harris and Lula Mae Harris-Kight. The family moved to Canton, Ohio, where Melvin spent his childhood and adolescence, wrestling, swimming, and hanging with friends.

Melvin's love for others sparked his passion for improving the lives of children and families. He was employed with Children Services and served a brief stint at Mental Health Services. As Melvin matured in his chosen profession, he furthered his education at Wayne State University and earned a Master's degree in Social Work. He later obtained his highest honor, a Ph.D. in Philosophy, from The Ohio State University.

On April 25, 1970, Melvin was united in holy matrimony to Mae Alice McDuffie. Two children were born of their union, Malik O. Harris and Mara K. Harris (Isaac). The family loved traveling, bowling, cooking, family gatherings, attending sporting events, and being instrumental in their community. Being a kind and dependable father was of the utmost importance to Melvin and he certainly did not disappoint when it came to loving his family. In 1988, Melvin and Mae Alice joined Shiloh Baptist Church. He was a faithful member for over thirty years.

Melvin was a lifetime member of the Mu Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He maintained active membership for over fifty-eight years. Melvin served on various committees at the local, state, and national levels. He dearly loved his fraternity, the services, as well as their contributions to the community.

Melvin always remained active in his community. He served as Board Member to various organizations such as the Catholic Community Services for West Virginia and at the time of his death, was a current Board Member at North Central Mental Health Services.
