SCHOEN, DAVID S., 77, of Louisville, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2007 at 5:00 a.m. surrounded by his family.

He battled cancer like he lived his life, with determination and passion, and near the end worried most about the massive family he loved so dearly. This obituary cannot adequately express the profound goodness of this man, nor clarify how devoted he was to his wife of 53 years, their nine children, 22 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and countless friends. Commitment, loyalty and sacrifice were the hallmarks of his life. David was always genuine, honest and sincerely humble. He greeted the world with his best regards and was well known for his warm smile and contagious laughter. He was truly an uncommonly decent man.

David was a senior vice president at Citizens Fidelity Bank and worked there for 28 years before his 12-year employment with Stock Yards Bank, where he also served as senior vice president.

David fondly recalled his early years of Catholic elementary school at Sacred Heart Model School and later at St. Frances of Rome. Exploring a new path, he attended Male High School instead of "St. X", where his three older brothers went and then on to Notre Dame, where he majored in Finance. He obtained his masters degree in banking from Rutgers University.

David was in ROTC in high school and college, entering the U.S. Air Force as a 1st Lt. and ending his active duty as a captain during the Korean War. As a civilian, he served in the Air Force Reserve.

David was involved in numerous community and civic organizations and activities throughout his life. Highlights include: He and some peers at Male founded Dignitas, a literary/social club and as an adult he was very involved in the Serra Club, Wayside Christian Mission and the Better Business of Louisville. David and his wife were extremely involved members of Cathedral of the Assumption Catholic Church, with it's School of Spirituality and Ministry Formation Program of the Archdiocese of Louisville. Before that, they were also very active at St. Pius X Catholic School and Church, where their nine children attended elementary school.

David was born April 4, 1929 in Louisville, KY to the late William J. and Virginia Key Schoen. He married his wife, Joan, on October 17, 1953 in Springfield, KY. They were partners and best friends.

David is survived by his wife and their nine children, their grandchildren and great grandchildren, and two brothers.

David's funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at the Cathedral of the Assumption Catholic Church, 433 S. Fifth Street, with his burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Thursday with a service at 8:00 p.m., at Ratterman's Funeral Home, 2711 Lexington Road. Memorial gifts in memory of David may be made to the Baptist Hospital East Oncology Fund, the James Graham Brown Cancer Center or the Cathedral of the Assumption Catholic Church, with either their daily lunch program, their sister parish in Haiti or their School of Spirituality.
