Some transcripts of Elmwood burial records list Harriet as "Harriet Allen James". The gravestone is inscribed "Harriet Allen Ames". Birth date from the obituary published in the Welcome from St. Albans Daily Messenger (Saint Albans, Vermont) on May 28, 1900.

Some accounts suggest Harriet was born in East Hampton, Massachusetts. Her obituary published in the Burlington Weekly Free Press May 31, 1900 states she was born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. The family moved to Easton, where her father John Ames, established Ames Knife Manufactury. Harriet moved to Burlington about 1830. She was the sister of Mrs. Stetson.

From the obituary: "Hers was a gentle, patient, sincere, unselfish character. She was a faithful friend; a lover of good books... Miss Ames was the last of eight children and her death takes away the last of that branch of the family. Miss Ames came from a famous Massachusetts family, among whom were Governor Ames and the famous Oakes Ames ."
