Sunday July 6, 2014 Canton paper
Early on the morning of Thursday, June 26th, 2014, lifelong Canton resident Olen Smith passed away quietly at his residence with his beloved family at his side. He was 93 years of age. Born in Canton on May 5th, 1921, he was the only child of Olen Sr. and Annie (Owens) Smith. He served our country during the Second World War in the United States Army's First Division, fighting at the Battle of The Bulge under the command of General George S. Patton. Prior to his deployment overseas Olen married his longtime sweetheart, Lenore Keagle, on January 30th, 1943. When he returned to civilian life he worked for many years as a machinist with the former Schrader-Bellows company in Canton. Olen was a man who applied himself to the greater good of his community. He was a member of the Innes Hose Company and served for many years as an active fire fighter. He was also a founding member of the Canton Ambulance Association (now Western Alliance Emergency Services). He was also a familiar sight at the various parades in Canton, where he could be seen driving his classic, mint-condition Studebaker amid the other classic vehicles. Most of all, Olen was devoted family man who loved his wife, children and grandchildren above all else. He is survived by his daughters Janna (Ray) Pitlyk of Albany, NY and Alaire (Mark) Miller of Canton, grandchildren David and Anne Pitlyk and Elliana Miller. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lenore, and his son, Richard. All services are private. In keeping with Olen's love of cats the family suggests that memorial contributions in his name be directed to You Too Rescue, in care of Chloe Lantzy, 39 Maple Acres Lane, Dushore, PA, 18614. Professional services provided by the Morse and Kleese Funeral Home, Canton.
