Hugh was educated at Glasgow University receiving a Doctor of Divinity.
He became Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Edinburgh University in 1799.
He joined the Church and was Licensed by the Presbytery of Dunfermline in 1788.
1791 he was Ordained and became Minister of Abercorn.
He served as Moderator of the General Assembly in 1810.
Hugh married Anne Liston (7 Feb 1768 - 27 Mar 1852)on 28 May 1792. Anne was the first child, daughter of the Rev. Robert Liston (22 Mar 1730 - 11 Feb 1796) and his wife, Janet Hardy (1744 - 31 Dec 1814 at Auldeathie, Hopetoun Park) Together they had 9 children:
1. Elizabeth (Eliza) Meiklejohn (12 Jun 1793, d. 1847)
2. Captain James Hope Johnstone Meiklejohn (5 Mar 1795 - 1856)who was a Captain in the 92nd Highlanders
3. Hugh Cree Meiklejohn (27 Jan 1797 - 1847)who went on to be a writer
4. Ann Meiklejohn (26 Jun 1798 - ??)
5. Rev. Robert Meiklejohn, MA (1 Oct 1800 - 16 Mar 1859 Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland)Educated at Edinburgh University he received a Master of Arts in 1824. He joined the church and was Licensed by the Presbytery of Linlithgow in 1824, was Ordained and became Minister of Strathdon in 1830. He married Elizabeth Grant Forbes (8 Jun 1811 - 26 Jan 1863, Heidelberg, Germany)and had 11 children.
6. Mary Meiklejohn (17 Oct 1802 - 6 Feb 1883)married the Rev. James Bryce (1785 - 11 Mar 1866, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland) on the 7 Jan 1822. They went on to have 5 children. James

9. Rev. William Hope Meiklejohn, DD (5 Aug 1811 - 14 Dec 1850) William studdied atEdimburgh University and reviced a Doctor of Divinity in 1849. He was Licensed by Presbytery of Linlithgow. Appointed to Indian chaplaincy (Calcutta), 1836. Ordained in 1837 he served as a Minister in India. He married Margaret Skene Campbell. No listed children.
