Major League Baseball Player. The right-handed pitcher broke into the major leagues with the California Angels in 1965. He tied for the American League lead in shutouts with six in 1967, when he posted a 12-8 record with a 2.96 earned run average. That year he had a string of 36 consecutive scoreless innings, including three straight shutouts from May 22-June 11. He pitched two shutout innings in the All-Star Game that year. He was traded to the Cincinnati Reds on Nov. 25, 1969, along with pitchers Pedro Borbon and Vern Geishert, for outfielder Alex Johnson and infielder Chico Ruiz. It appeared he was headed to the 1970 All-Star Game when he blanked Houston on July 4 for his 11th win. Four days later he was hit on a knee by a line drive off the bat of San Diego's Ramon Webster, Having lost his rhythm, he dropped his next four decisions. To make matters worse, he suffered a hairline fracture of the right temporal bone when struck in the head by a line drive off Los Angeles' Billy Grabarkewitz's bat. He finished the year 14-10. For his nine-year career he had a 67-77 record and 3.61 ERA.
