US Congressman, New York City Mayor. A New Jersey-born Democrat who rose to political prominence in the Empire State, Ely graduated from New York University Law School in 1846. Although admitted to the New York bar, he pursued a mercantile career and never actually practiced law. He served in Albany from 1858 to 1859 as a state senator from the 5th District, and was later elected to the United States Congress for two terms, representing New York's 7th District from 1871 to 1873 and again from 1875 to 1876. Ely was also notably the mayor of New York City from 1877 to 1878. After retiring from politics he returned to the state of his birth, where he died at the age of 86. He was buried in the family plot on the Ely Estate in Livingston, New Jersey, now known as "Ely Cemetery."
