Leslie Edward Benson, Sr.

CUMBERLAND-Leslie E. Benson, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday July 6, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his family and after a family group hug.
Born on December 2, 1928, in Tiltonville, Ohio, he was the son of the late Wilbur and Orpha (DuVall) Benson.
He was also preceded in death by his brother Kenneth Benson; two sisters Betty Benson and Dorothy (Benson)Scheible; and his grandson Leslie Edward Benson III.
Les grew up in Oldtown. He was a proud American. After attending Oldtown High School, with the help of his father, he joined the United States Army just after turning 17. (The Army believed him to be 18.) Les was initially in the 86th Division and completed Automotive Supervision traning and eventually went to the Philippines. In 1948, Les became a paratrooper and served in the 11th Airborne Division in Japan. After active duty, Les served in the National Guard stateside. Les' final rank was Master Sargent.
Next, Les worked for the Liggett and Meyers Company as a salesman. In 1962 he stated working for American Chicle, a division of Warner Lambert. Les was a salesman and retired in 1990 after 28 years of service.
Les had three joys in life. His first joy was the Lord. Les was proud to be a Christian and he loved the Lord. Les served as a Deacon in Memorial Heights and Oldtown Baptist Churches for over 30 yers and taught Sunday School. He led several people to the Lord with his faithful service.
His second joy was his wife Patricia. They were married for 62 years. She was the love of his life and he idolized her. The last word he could speak was Patricia. His final act of love was giving her a kiss goodbye.
His final joy was his family. He was a dedicated and loving father to Debi, Butch, and Lisa. He showed them love and taught them by the example. He was known to his Grandchildren as Pappy. He was always there for them and they brought him much joy.
Surviving are his wife Patricia (Grapes) Benson; one son Leslie E. "Butch" Benson Jr. and wife Karen, Cross Junction Virginia; two daughters Debi (Benson) Lee and husband John, Chesapeake Virginia, Lisa (Benson) Carney and husband Galen, of Cumberland; six grandchildren Jeffrey Lee Sr. and wife Shannon, John Lee and wife Megan, Julie Lee, Brad Benson, Brian Benson and Gavin Carney; five great-grandchildren Jeffrey Lee Jr. and wife Rachel, Austin Lee, Isaac Lee, Evelynn Lee and Ty Lee; one great-great grandchild Jeffrey Lee III; other special family members, nephew Fred Benson, nieces Dorothy Bees, Harriet Dixon, and brothers-in-law Richard "Dick" Grapes and the late David "Sonny" Grapes
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A. (www.scarpellifh.com) 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Service will be conducted at the Memorial Heights Baptist Church on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Chan Hubbard officiating. Friends will be received at the church one-hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in Davis Memorial Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veteran's Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be Brad Benson, Jeffrey Lee Sr., Jeffrey Lee Jr., Johnnie Lee, Austin Lee and brother-in-law Dick Grapes. Honorary pallbearers will be Brian Benson, Isaac Lee, Gavin Carney, Ty Lee and Jeffrey Lee III.
