James Riley Glass was born on February 13, 1863 in Caldwell County, Kentucky, the son of John Glass (1832–1904) and George Ann (Hopper) Glass (1840–1902).
He was married to Kate Clifton (1872–1951).
A school teacher, he was 79 years old and married when he died of cirrhosis of the liver on January 10, 1943 in Nashville. His body was removed to Kentucky for burial in Kuttawa Cemetery in Lyon County.
