Dr. Putnam began his study of medicine in Castleton, Vermont. At the time of the 1860 US Census, he was studying medicine and living in the household of Dr. WHH Richardson in Montpelier, Vermont.
On November 5, 1860, Dr. Putnam enlisted as a Private in Company A, 1st Battalion, US Engineers. He transferred to Company D in July, 1862 as a Sargent, and was promoted to 1st Sargeant before mustering out November 5, 1865.
Married Lettice Ann Spear March 22, 1866 in Ludlow, Vermont. Their son, John Wallace, was born in Ludlow on December 1, 1868.
Dr. Putnam practiced law in Ludlow, Vermont from from 1868 or 1869 (depending on source) to 1876. He owned a house there until about 1878, in what is now the Ludlow Village Historic District In 1901, the house was replaced with a building for the Odd Fellows Association (Altimont Lodge No. 30, I.O.O.F.).
About 1876, the family moved to Rutland, Vermont, and then to Hot Springs Arizona. Lettie died there in 1892.
Dr. Putnam married Kate Tiffany about 1893. They lived in Rutland, where Dr. Putnam continued his practice. After his death, Kate moved to California to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Isabelle Tiffany Hadley and Marquis De Lafayette Hadley.
An obituary was published in The Vermont Watchman on February 06, 1901, in the St. Albans Daily Messenger on January 30, 1901, and in the Journal of the American Medical Society, 1901.
