Enlisted as private, 10th Vermont Volunteer Infantry Regiment, July 17, 1862. Promoted to first sergeant. Married Ellen G. Rowell of North Troy, Orleans County, November 30, 1864. Two children, Blanche P., who married William A. Spring, an American dentist from Dresden, Germany, and Max Leon, who graduated from University of Vermont and worked with father in law and insurance businesses, as well as serving as Deputy State Auditor, Assistant Clerk of the Vermont House, and Secretary of the Vermont Senate. Achieved superior score on 1863 officer candidate examination, commissioned lieutenant colonel, assigned to 10th Cavalry. Acting commander or commander of regiment, serving for nearly 15 months after end of Civil War. Regiment one of four organized as a brigade, which he commanded by virtue of seniority over other regimental commanders. Discharged as Lieutenant Colonel, 1866. Studied law while in Army, admitted to Texas bar, 1865. Returned to Richford, admitted to Vermont bar, began practice. Federal Inspector of Customs, 1866-69. Franklin County State's Attorney, 1872-74. Organizer and President, Richford Savings and Trust Company, 1874. Vermont House, 1874-76. Vermont Senate, 1878-80. After death of first wife married Mrs. Georgiana Reed Bailey (died 1930), widow of Vermont's Secretary of State George W. Bailey, Jr., October 1, 1877. Two children, attorney Thomas Reed Powell, graduate of University of Vermont and Harvard Law School, and Gertrude Reed Powell, graduate of Smith College. Vermont Auditor, 1878-92.
