FO Higgs was one of the two the first Pilots to be killed during the Battle of Britain.

111 Squadron was formed in 1917
It was located at RAF Croydon from June 4th 1940

Higgs was educated at The Royal Masonic School and Merton College Oxford where he read Modern History.
He was a member of the University Air Squadron and joined the RAF as a direct entry commission in Oct 1938.
After completing training he joined 111 Squadron at Croydon on May 24th 1940 and was attached to RAF Uxbridge for a RT course.

On July 10th Higgs was attached by Oberleutanant Oesau of III JG/51 over the Channel off Folkeston.
Taking avoiding action he collided with a Do17 and lost a wing at 6000 feet. He baled out and was killed.
The Dornier of 3/KG2 crashed at Dungeness Buoy.

NOORDWIJK GENERAL CEMETERY

Location Information: Noordwijk is situated to the north of Den Haag on the coast. From the motorway 44 follow the signs for Noordwijk and the N206. In the town keep following the N206 and at the roundabout turn right in the direction of Noordwijk Binnen. Follow along Beeklaan and then Oude Zeeweg after passing the downs and an open space on the right. The Cemetery will be found on the right. The Commonwealth War Graves Plot is situated in a belt of trees overlooking the remainder of the Cemetery.

Historical Information: The Commonwealth plot in Noordwijk General Cemetery contains 81 burials of the First World War, including 54 unidentified naval ratings. Of the 52 Second World War burials, 19 are unidentified. The plot also contains two Polish war graves.
