Axel was the son of John & Emma Backlund. They immigrated to the U.S. arriving in Boston, Mass. on 9 Aug 1907 aboard the ship "Cymric".
The family settled on a farm in Cuming county, NE and then moved to Oakland, NE. After the father's death, Emma Backlund remarried to Gust W. Anderson. In 1920, Axel worked as a laborer in Oakland and had a residence at a rooming house. In 1930, he worked on the railroad section and lived with his stepfather and mother.

Axel Nickanor Backlund, who spent most of his life in Oakland, died suddenly early last Saturday at his home here, as a result of pneumonia. He had been ill only a few days. His age was 35 years, 10 months and 21 days
Born at Pautrask, Stensele socken, Vasterbottens lan, Ssweden, Jan. 6, 1902, Axel came to Oakland directly from Sweden in 1907. He had made his home here since, attending the Oakland schools.
Axel was baptized in the Lutheran faith in Sweden, and after coming to Oakland, was confirmed in the Mission church by Rev. Skoglund in 1914. His father died April 5, 1915, and an infant son also preceded him in death.
Left to mourn him are his mother, Mrs. Emma Anderson; his step-father, Gust W. Anderson; two brothers, Jens of California, and Bengt of Oakland; one sister, Mrs. Thomas L. Brown, of Sioux City, Ia., and a number of more distant relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held from the home of the funeral director, H.E. Paulson, in charge of Dr. Leonard Stromberg, with burial in the Oakland cemetery.
Out of town persons who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Eric Morell of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Anderson, Ethel and Violet, and Gust V. Anderson of Fremont, Mr. and Mrs. Arvid Johnson and son and daughter of Winslow, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas L. Brown of Sioux City.
