Son of Mrs. Rose Kelly, of Parnell Row, Granard, Co. Longford.

Edward Kelly was born on 4 November 1897, at Granard, to Michael Kelly and Rose Kelly, formerly Reilly.
His father was a Labourer.

In the 1911 census, the Kelly family were living at Dublin Street, Granard.

Rose, his wife, aged 46, married,
They had been married 18 years and had 6 children, all still living.

James, son, aged 17, an Agricultural Labourer,

All members of the family had been born in Co. Longford.

He was a military passenger on board R.M.S. Leinster which was sunk by torpedoes from a German Submarine in the Irish Sea, 16 miles east of Dublin, shortly before 10am on the morning of 10th October 1918, on its outbound journey of 100km [68 miles] from Kingstown [now Dun Laoghaire], Dublin, to Holyhead, Anglesey, North Wales.
His body was not recovered.
