John Davis Batchelder, the son of George W. and Kate Davis Batchelder was born in Faribault on March 12, 1872. He attended the Faribault public schools and graduated from Shattuck Military Academy. Following that, he attended the University of Vermont where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree. He received his A. M. Degree from John's Hopkins. Later, he studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and received his Ph.D. from that institution. Dr. Batchelder had also made additional studies at the University of Berlin, the University of Madrid, and at Oxford University. Dr. Batchelder had taught at Shattuck School for several years, and later at the Case Institute of Technology at Cleveland. He had done extensive traveling and during the course of these travels, he had collected many volumes of rare books. In 1938, he gave this extensive collection to the lIbrary of Congress where it will be kept intact at the Batchelder Collection.
Dr. Batchelder was a member of the University and Players Club of New York City, and the Cosmos and Metropolitan Clubs in Washington, D. C. He had been a resident of Washington, D. C. for many years. Recently, he had moved to Evanston, Ill. to be near his nieces. Dr. Batchelder died at the Evanston Hospital on Friday June 27th. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Mrs. Charles S. Batchelder of Faribault; by three nieces, Mrs. Edwin R. Smythe (Kathryne) of Mount Holly, N. J., Mrs. Raleigh Stone (Ursulla) of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Paul S. Kramer (Gay) of Evanston, Ill.; by two nephews, K. Chase Batchelder of Faribault and George W. Batchelder of Glendora, Calif.
