Helen Gertrude Hughes Sorensen, 74, passed away Monday, June 16, 1997, at the Logan Regional Hospital following a lingering illness. She was born November 29, 1922, in Montpelier, to William Henry and Johanna Bienz Hughes, being the youngest of three children. She was reared and educated in Montpelier, graduating from Montpelier High School in 1940.

Following graduation, she was a telephone operator for Mountain States Telephone Co., later being promoted to Chief Operator in which position she remained until the closing of the Montpelier office. She then accepted employment with First Security Bank.

Following her marriage to Clarence N. (Stoney) Sorensen July 26, 1968 in Paris, she continued to work for First Security until the employment of her husband, a railroader, took them to Pocatello, where they lived for several years. After his retirement they returned to Montpelier where they have since resided.

She enjoyed bowling and flower gardening, but especially loved fishing and camping trips with her husband, their family and friends. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Helen is survived by her husband of Montpelier, nieces, Virginia (Forrest) Jacobsen of Montpelier and Cathlene (Robert) Ellsworth of Clearfield, Ut.; sisters-in-law, Rebecca (Howard) Nasker of Emmett, Id., Florence (Milo) Dayton and Leona Twiss both of Montpelier and many great and great-great-nieces and nephews who loved “Aunt Helen” very much. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Gladys Virginia Swenson; a brother, Richard William Hughes; a niece, Dorothy Swenson Erhart and a great nephew, Christopher Jacobsen.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 19, in the Matthews Mortuary Chapel. Interment was in the Montpelier Cemetery.
