Delores Mae Tuttle was the daughter of Bernard and Edna Hiner Tuttle. She was the youngest of nine children and grew up on the family farm north of Victor, Iowa. She graduated from Victor High School in 1949.
Delores was married to Samuel Schmidt in Lancaster, Missouri on September 15, 1951. They began their life together in Grinnell and Victor before moving to Deep River. In 1955 they purchased a farm south of Deep River where they lived for 45 years.
Delores and Sam owned and operated Schmidt Trucking for 35 years, as well as Sam's Place in What Cheer from 1961-1974. The couple was known for trying a lot of different ventures, all of which seemed to be successful.
Together they had a lunch wagon that provided food to hungry auction crowds. For many years the couple set up at the What Cheer Flea Market. You could always find Delores' delicious pies and baked goods ready for sale at their stand. She also sold her pies and baked goods at the local Farmer's Market for many years. Many local and passersby could not resist stopping in to purchase Muscatine Melons from their roadside stand.
After retirement Delores and Sam traveled south to Texas for several winters. They enjoyed attending the World's Fair in Knoxville, TN. She loved playing BINGO, cards, attending 50+ Club, and watching music shows at the What Cheer Opera House. She enjoyed going out for a nice meal.
She had a love for dancing that she shared with her close friend Norm. They attended dances together for as long as she was able and enjoyed every minute of it.
No matter how busy she was with her ventures, she always found time to be a loving mother to her children, William, Robert and Brenda. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend whose smile and caring spirit will not be forgotten.
