Carlene Brooks, 83, of Clyde, died Thursday, July 3, 2014, at an Abilene hospital.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at Southside Baptist Church in Clyde with Billy Sellers officiating. Burial will follow in the Clyde Cemetery under the direction of Bailey-Howard Funeral Home. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Carlene was born February 25, 1931, in Christoval, Texas, to Carl MacMiken and Mary Ellen (Bryson) Roberson.

She was a 1948 graduate of Oplin High School and received her LVN from Cisco Junior College.

She was the widow of Herman Alton Brooks whom she married in Abilene on December 21, 1968.

Carlene was an LVN and worked in Little Rock for a year, then moved back to Texas and worked at the Abilene State School for 20 years and the Clyde Nursing Center for 11 years.

Since 1997, she has worked at Clyde Intermediate School in the Foster Grandparent Program providing help to students who need a little extra attention. The kids at school all called her "Granny."

She was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

Carlene is survived by two sons, Carl Miller and wife Loyce of Clyde and Joseph Brooks of Austin; three daughters, Kay Jones, Debbie Gonzales and Jeannie Tedford, all of Abilene; 11 grandchildren, Becky Stephenson King & husband Jimmy, Toni Stephenson Carr, Heather Stephenson Brewer and husband Joshua, Mindi Stephenson Negus and husband Jason, Chris Miller, Tammy Miller Moffitt, Amanda Nelson, Samantha Miller, Jennifer Ward, Stephanie Rose, and Joshua Brooks Johnson; 25 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Carlene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman; one daughter, Jaynie Beth Stephenson; two sons, Daniel Miller and Edward (Eddy) Brooks; two brothers, Leonard Roberson and Conrad Roberson; and one sister, Betty Jane Barrington.
