Donald Eugene Sherwood died of natural causes May 3rd, at Providence Hospital in Anchorage. Don was born January 27, 1933 and adopted by Fred and Mildred Sherwood. He loved growing up in the Pacific Northwest and had many grand adventures on the Olympic Peninsula with his buddy Joe Higdon. Don is a Korea and Vietnam veteran. He retired from the US Army after 22 years as a senior aircraft crewman. He and his wife Margo and their two sons transferred to Alaska in 1966. Don fell in love with "God's Country" and all it had to offer. He took 2nd place in the Seward Salmon Derby in 1970 and used the winnings against closing costs for a new family home. After retiring from the Army, he worked as an Anchorage mailman and then for Civil Service on Fort Richardson.

Don is survived by his wife, Margo; son, Charles and wife, Lori; daughter in law, Terry; grandchildren, Amber, Corry, Tammy, Chad and wife Rebecca, and Donald Sherwood III (Desi); great grandchildren, Kale, Reese, Katlin, Madilyn, Brookelynn and Jemma. He was preceded in death by his son, Donald Sherwood II and his parents, Fred and Mildred Sherwood.

Affectionately known by his great grandchildren as "Papa Trains," Don was a well-known community member, most recently for his involvement in the Military Society of Model Railroad Engineers. He was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol, Past President of the Alaska Boating Association (call name "LoneEagle"), Moose Lodge, and the AARP.

Don loved river boating, fishing and hunting and could be found most summers on the Susitna and Deshka, shuttling friends and family to various fishing holes or untangling his grandkids fishing lines. He was a licensed pilot, an avid bowler, and in his younger days he even raced cars. He loved anything that involved going fast including helicopters and planes. He had a passion for his hobbies and the outdoors and loved sharing them with his family and friends. He toured around Alaska in his motorhome harassing tourists and enjoying time camping with his family. He was a true Alaskan until the end!

Don was his kids and grandkids biggest fan whether it was bowling, baseball, softball, soccer, skiing, shooting, dance and singing recitals he was always front and center. He even helped his late son Don and wife Terry bring a boat from Washington to Alaska through the Gulf of Alaska.

Don was a father to many including some of his fellow train members, neighbors and friends who proudly called him Dad. He even became Dad to foreign exchange students Ion Buenetxea and Isabelle Touche when they came to Alaska for high school and continued to live with Don and Margo while attending college. Ion and Isabelle have remained very much loved members of the Sherwood family fostering a few of the Sherwood's at their homes in return.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m., May 15th at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. At 3:00 p.m. there will be a Celebration of Life, at Moose Lodge on Arctic Blvd. If you would like to attend the graveside service be at the gate (Ft. Richardson entrance) at 1:00 p.m. Special passes will not be required if you are part of the funeral procession which will be led to the cemetery, en masse, at approximately 1:10 p.m.
