Born in Middlesboro, KY to Leo and Kathryn Wardrup, he grew up the precocious brother to six equally precocious siblings, Florence, Mimi, Phyllis, Tom, Virginia and Elizabeth.
Leo attended Castle Heights Military Academy and graduated class valedictorian. At UNC Chapel Hill, he was a Morehead Scholar and chosen to be one of what he wryly called "The Suicide 25" — who were assigned an intensely rigorous academic and leadership path. He later earned an MBA in Economics from GWU and a post graduate degree at Georgetown.
Having taught sailing at the Naval Academy, it was one of his greatest loves. Captain and co-owner of the "Black Widow", a 38' Irwin Bermuda sloop, so named because, like the spider, sailing first seduces and then consumes, he and longtime partners Ken Copeland, Alvin Girardin and Carl Gade, and all who gamely crewed over the years, were forces to be reckoned with in Chesapeake Bay racing circles.
Leo is survived by his wife, Gloria; daughter, Ashley Griffiths, husband Mark and granddaughter Hallie; son, Leo III (Jay) Wardrup and wife Connie; and son-in-law, Ross Flippen, and granddaughters, Kathryn and Carmen. Leo was no stranger to tragedy. Losing his youngest daughter, Suzannah to leukemia, he channeled his sorrow into generously giving his time and resources to various causes.
He is also survived by stepson, Christopher Lowe, wife Kristin and their children James, Sophia and Catherine, former wife Elizabeth, and so many true friends and family. He leaves his faithful Chester who stayed at his side throughout his illness.
For those wishing to celebrate Leo's life, services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, 8 July 2014 at Bayside Presbyterian Church, Virginia Beach, to be followed by a reception in the church hall. He will be buried later in a private ceremony at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
The family suggests donations to the Cape Charles Cup (CCC), an event dear to Leo's heart. Donations should be made out to the Broad Bay Sailing Association at PO Box 14324, Norfolk, VA 23518. CCC takes place on his beloved Chesapeake Bay and following the event a sizeable contribution is made to "Sail Nauticus" which is then generously matched by Mrs. Frank Batten. Donations are also welcome to Bayside Presbyterian Church, Virginia Beach, where Leo worshiped as are flowers. We mostly appreciate your love and support to Leo.
