Son of Captain James Withers and brother of John. His headstones per the website of the National Register of Historic Places says his headstone notes he was born at Friendfield plantation. He secondly married his deceased wife's cousin, Sarah P. Warham (maiden name Hunt), widow of William Warham.

There is also a cenotaph for him at Prince George Winyah.
