When Maureen Catherine Bickert was born on April 17, 1916, in Nebraska, her father, William Ambrose Bickert, was 41 and her mother, Mary Dalton Bickert, was 38. She was the youngest of a family of two boys and three girls. Her grandfather Ambrose Bickert fought in an Ohio regiment during the Civil War. Her given name was Catherine Maureen. Called Sadie as a child, she was "Maureen" as an adult and used "Maureen Catherine" in legal documents.

She grew up on a farm outside of Exeter. She used to tell the story of how the Ku Klux Klan would occasionally set crosses on fire on their property because of the family's Catholicism; she and her father would drive out in a Model T with buckets of water to put out the fires. She married Donald Francis Farrell in January 1936 and moved with him to Omaha where she lived the rest of her life. She had two children with Don Farrell, a daughter Sharon in 1936 and a son Gary in 1938. A devout Catholic, she was a member of Saint Margaret Mary's parish on Dodge Street in Omaha for her entire adult life.

Her five grandchildren, who loved her dearly, were through her daughter Sharon. Her great missions in life were to care for others and help her grandchildren grow up to be healthy and productive adults. After the death of her husband in 1986, she was a widow for 13 years. She died of lymphoma in hospice on August 24, 1999, in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 83. Her grandchildren Michael Meyer, Laurie Thomas, and Shari Hastings were with her at the time of her death. Her husband Don and her son Gary predeceased her. Her daughter Sharon died in October 2012.
