George H. Croot's father and his siblings immigrated from Moretonhamptead, Devon, England. His father Joseph Croot was in Chester, NJ by c.1860. Two of George's uncles--Samuel and James Croot--and two of his brothers--William and John R. Croot--settled in Iowa.

George is found in the 1880 Census in Chester, NJ with his parents. According to his obit he moved to Iowa in 1881. He married Annie Buckton in Iowa Falls, Hardin Co, IA on 25 Dec 1890.

They had three children born in Iowa:
* Lavere 1891-1980
* Clarence 1893-1977
* Della Frances Bates 1896-1985 (220387145). A Iowa Falls high school teacher, she married John H. Bates 1896-1982 in 1942 in Oakland, CA.

After the children were born, George and Annie went traveling. They are found in the 1900 Census in Manitou, CO. In the 1910 Census, they were in San Diego, CA where George ran a restaurant.

By the 1920 Census they were back in Iowa. George was listed as a farmer in Lee, Franklin Co IA. In 1930, they were again in Hardin Co IA and George was listed as a well driller. His brother John R. Croot had a well drilling business and it is likely George joined him.

Annie died in 1939 at son Lavere's home. George died in 1941 at son Clarence's home.

Croot 76, Monday night at home of his son Clarence at Independence; born Sept. 15, 1865, at Chester, N.J.; came to Iowa Falls in 1881 and lived here until five years ago when he went to Independence to live with his son; married Annie Buckton, Dec. 25, 1890, leaves daughter Della, Oakland, Cal.; two sons LeVere, Iowa Falls, and Clarence; three grandchildren; two brothers Joseph, Chester, and William, Moville; and a half-brother, Samuel, Newark, N.J.; funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wood funeral home here; burial in Union cemetery."
