Lived in Wood County, West Virginia in the Walker area until March 1865 when the family migrated to Ohio to avoid bush-whackers at the end of the Civil War. Part of the family came by train (B&O) to West Junction (in Vinton County) and part by oxen and wagons. A big man, Zachariah collapsed and died in the old Hickman house (south of Hickman Cemetery) right after eating a big supper.
Zachariah is probably named for his uncle Zachariah Hickman (1778-1854), son of famed Indian fighter Sotha Hickman and Elizabeth Davis. Zach's grave is between that of Matson Riley and Zach's wife Hannah Riley Hickman. The tombstone has fallen over.
