Kenswell Otho "Dewey" Dewey

Kenswell Otho "Dewey" Dewey, 88, of Amarillo died Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, in Sugar Land.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Fairview Assembly of God, 3706 S.E. 10th Ave., with the Rev Cliff Houghton officiating. Arrangements are by Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 S. Bell St.

Dewey was born April 10, 1920, in Gove, Kan., to Thomas and Fern Dewey. Shortly after joining the U.S. Army during World War II, Dewey met the love of his live, Bernice Ruth Scott, in Amarillo at the Double Dip Drive-In on South Polk Street. They married Oct. 11, 1941, in Amarillo and were stationed at Camp Roberts, Calif.

After the war, they returned to Amarillo, where they settled and raised two children. Dewey attended Amarillo College and received his associate degree in painting and decorating.

Throughout his career as an independent contractor, Dewey worked for several prominent families in the Texas Panhandle, including the Farrells, Weymouths, Kritzers, Fains, Bivins and Hintons, and Betty Ditto of Tucumcari, N.M., to name a few. Dewey was an artist and truly a master of his work. Both Dewey and Bernice were very active in their church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and three brothers.

Survivors include a daughter, Dee Ann Dowlen and husband, George of Hilton Head, S.C.; a son, Ken Dewey and wife Jennifer of Sugar Land; four grandchildren, Trey Bunch of Dallas, Kenswell "Kody" Dewey II of Oklahoma City and Thomas and Jack Dewey, both of Sugar Land; two great-grandchildren, Madeline Bunch of Dallas and Sky Anne Dewey of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Genevieve McDonald of Yakima, Wash., and Maxine Belcher of Warrior, Ala.; and numerous other special relatives and friends.

The family suggests memorials be to Amarillo SPCA, 11901 S. Coulter St., Amarillo, TX 79119.

The family will receive friends and family from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Dewey, Larry Dewey, Darrell Dewey, Trey Bunch, Bill Matlock, Bob Dimmitt and John Kuhn. Honorary Pallbearers are Luis Guitierrez, Joe Garcia and Cameron Presson.
