Mary A. Byars Oct. 20, 1922 ~ Feb. 4, 2009 Resident of Martinez Mary slipped peacefully into the arms of Jesus on February 4, 2009. She was born on October 20, 1922 in Vallejo, California, and moved to Martinez a couple years later. She was a resident of Martinez for over 80 years, graduating from Alhambra High School in 1942. She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years "Skip" (Hilma) and their three sons, Dan, Alan, and Ken, and Ken's wife Karen, all of Martinez. She was a loving grandmother of 10 and great-grandmother of 7. She is also survived by her brothers Ed Goddard (Catherine) of Martinez and Carl Goddard (Helen) of Lincoln, CA., and sister Crystal Bartolomi of Vacaville. She was preceded in death by her brother Jim and sister Elta. Mary was a member of Bethany Baptist Church for over 40 years. She served as a Sunday School teacher and nursery worker and became known as "Grandma Mary" to many over the years. She and Skip were members of the Martinez Senior center and spent countless hours volunteering there. She leaves behind numerous other friends and relatives and will be dearly missed by all. A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, February 10th, at Bethany Baptist Church, Martinez. Viewing will be at 11:30am & the Service will be held at 12:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bethany Baptist Church in Mary's name.
